Quietest of the four

Preila

Preila is a small village between Pervalka and Nida, founded in the mid-19th century. It is ideal for a quiet walk by the lagoon and discovering the history of a fishing village.

What makes this place interesting

Preila’s wooden houses, lagoon shore and nearby forest paths invite you to slow down. Take time to observe everyday life by the water.

It also arose from necessity rather than choice. Almost every homestead is a consequence of that relocation, described below.

What to see

  1. Lagoon shore and boats

Preila's main view: a calm strip of water, reeds and a few boats. Almost nobody is here in the evening.

  2. Vecekrugas Dune

A wooded dune nearby, overlooking lagoon and pine forest. The path to the top runs through woodland, so the climb is shaded.

    Stay on the marked path.

  3. Settlement homesteads

Small and tidy, without resort glamour. They reveal everyday life on the spit rather than holiday life.

  4. Forest paths

Walking or cycling from Preila towards Pervalka is easy, along one of the spit’s quietest stretches.

Local context

A settlement born from loss

When moving dunes buried surrounding villages, residents had to establish new homes. Preila arose this way in the mid-19th century.

This is documented history, not a pretty legend. It explains the settlement’s small size and sheltered position between forest and lagoon.

Practical information

Meals
Preila has few eateries, not all open outside the season. Check before planning lunch or bring your own food.
Combine with Pervalka
The two nearby settlements fit well into one itinerary, taking half a day together.
When to visit
Preila is at its best outside the season and in the evening. At a midsummer noon it feels empty rather than peaceful.
Accommodation
For those wanting a quiet holiday without evening activities every night. Nida is a short drive away.

Preila's tour centres on stories rather than a list of sights, so it is often combined with Pervalka.
